Choosing an air conditioner or heat pump
Select air conditioning by the cooling load. Around 100 W per square metre is a rough starting point for an ordinary room; glazing, kitchens and equipment add heat. Inverter split systems regulate their output rather than simply switching on and off.
Compare wall-mounted, ceiling-cassette or ducted indoor units; cooling and heating with an air-to-air heat pump or cooling-only operation; noise levels; and multi-split systems with several indoor units connected to one outdoor unit.
What to check
- Calculate capacity from the room and heat load, not floor area alone.
- Check cold-weather heating output if the unit is also needed for heating.
- Choose the indoor unit type and outdoor unit position to suit the premises.
- Check noise levels in offices and dining rooms.
- Use a qualified installer; refrigerant handling requires the relevant certification.
Where to use it
Offices and shops may suit wall or cassette units; restaurant dining rooms may suit cassettes. Server rooms need equipment rated for continuous operation. A small office may use a heat pump for both heating and cooling.
