Choosing a chest freezer

Chest freezers retain much of their cold air when opened. Solid lids suit storage and kitchens; sliding glass lids show stock to customers on the shop floor.

Compare capacity of 100–600 l, straight, sloping or curved glass lids, basket number, operating temperature (−18…−24 °C, or specialist −45 or −60 °C) and defrosting, usually manual.

What to check

• Capacity and floor space: measure the freezer and the clearance needed to open its lid.
• A solid lid limits heat gain; glass displays products. Curved glass improves visibility; straight glass may cost less.
• Baskets and dividers keep stock organised.
• Defrost-water drainage and opportunities to empty the freezer.
• Climate class for a warm sales area.

Where to use it

Glass-lid models suit retail ice cream and frozen-food displays; solid lids suit storage. Medical and laboratory applications may require specialist −45/−60 °C models.
