Choosing a multideck display fridge

Multideck displays provide self-service access to milk, drinks, prepared food and meat. An air curtain flows down the front of open shelves, keeping products accessible. Open displays can be a major source of refrigeration energy use.

Compare self-contained units with an integral compressor or remote units for a central system; length 1–3.75 m; shelf number and depth; doors or night blinds; and temperature ranges of +2…+8 or −1…+5 for meat and fish.

What to check

• Length and height: enough shelves and depth for stock, with products at an accessible viewing height.
• Self-contained or remote: weigh heat and noise in the shop against installation cost.
• Doors may reduce energy consumption by up to 40 %, while adding a step for the customer. Actual savings depend on the installation.
• Night blinds where doors are not fitted.
• Lighting beneath shelves and price-ticket strips.

Where to use it

Door-fronted chilled displays suit dairy, drinks and prepared food; lower-temperature models suit meat and fish. A self-contained 1.25–1.9 m unit can suit a small shop; supermarkets may use linked remote units.
