Choosing a cold room
Cold rooms use polyurethane panels: typically 80 mm for chilled storage (+2…+8 °C), and 100–120 mm for freezer rooms (−18…−22 °C). They are assembled on site and may be extendable later, subject to the design.
Size the refrigeration unit for the room volume, temperature and incoming warm stock. Too little capacity prevents the room reaching temperature; excessive capacity can cause short cycling and dry out products.
What to check
- Internal and external dimensions, door clearance and a floor suitable for trolley access.
- Temperature and panel thickness. Freezer-room designs may need floor heating to protect the subfloor from freezing.
- Refrigeration unit: wall-mounted monoblock, or split system with the compressor outside to reduce indoor noise.
- Door: hinged or sliding, strip curtains, lock and internal release.
- Check whether shelving and lighting are included.
Where to use it
A 4–10 m² monoblock cold room may suit restaurant or shop back rooms. Production and warehouse sites may need larger split-system rooms. Consider a separate freezer room when frozen stock exceeds a few chest freezers.
