Choosing an upright freezer
An upright freezer typically holds −18…−22 °C, arranging stock on accessible shelves and using less floor space than a chest. Compare energy use and temperature recovery after opening the door.
Compare doors and defrosting. Solid doors suit stores and kitchens; glass doors suit sales displays. Automatic no-frost defrosting reduces manual defrosting, but does not eliminate routine maintenance. Manual defrosting is simpler and needs planned emptying.
What to check
- Capacity: 200–300 l for small kitchens, 600–700 l for typical kitchens, 1200–1400 l for stores.
- Check whether the unit maintains −22 °C in a warm kitchen, including its climate class 4–5 rating and exact operating limits.
- Defrost: commonly automatic in fan-assisted cabinets and manual in static cabinets; check the model.
- Solid doors for storage, glass doors for display; check hinge direction and whether a lock is needed.
- GN 2/1 shelving and shelf load limits for heavy stock.
Where to use it
Solid-door fan-assisted cabinets suit kitchen and store stock. Glass-door cabinets can display ice cream and frozen food. Chest freezers may use less energy for long-term bulk storage.
